Setting Goals: Where to Start?
“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” – Tony Robbins
I recently posted about setting your goals for the year in 4 easy steps and shared a goal look back for a past year. These posts give you ~30 goals you can use for inspiration to set your own for the year. Perhaps they aren’t quite right for you or you want more to help to get you going? I got you covered! Here’s 94 goals you can steal and modify for yourself. Remember, you want less than 20 goals. I usually have 10-20.
Goals Evolve with you
“That is what I mean when I say that we die many deaths in the course of our lives: The teenager in you dies, the college student in you dies, the single unattached you dies, the version of you that’s a parent of an infant dies, and so on. Once each of these mini-deaths occurs, there’s no going back. Maybe “dies” is a bit harsh, but you get the idea: We all keep moving forward, progressing from one stage or phase of our lives to the next.”
― Bill Perkins, Die with Zero:
When you’re in your 20-30s, most your goals will likely be about establishing your career and getting out of debt or getting yourself in better financial position. Perhaps you will be working on a degree or advanced degree and all that entails. You’re likely looking for a relationship or trying to decide if the relationship you’re in is the one you want forever. Kids or no kids? Buy or rent?
When you’re in your 40-50s, you’ll be thinking a lot about what changes you should make in your career path, when you can afford to retire, how you’re going to pay for college for your kids, your health, your aging parents, how to build friendships after devoting so much time to your career.
When you’re in your 60s-70s, you’ll be concerned about your health, legacy, staying fit, spending time with those you love and taking any trips on your bucket list.
Your goals change as you age. Make sure you do the things you should when you have the chance. Backpacking across Europe or South America is an awesome goal for a 20 year old. Most people in the 50s don’t want to travel like that anymore. Don’t wait until you’re in your 50s to do that trip, you’ll have missed your window.
94 Goals by Category
The goals below are categorized for your viewing pleasure. Many of these are pretty general with a few examples of specific goals. For instance, take the goal, “Be a better spouse/partner,” this goal is way too general. To make it specific, have a conversation with your partner to figure out what would make you a better partner. Perhaps it means reading The Five Love Languages in the evening out loud together, taking on some chore they hate but you don’t mind (I like vacuuming, hate putting sheets on the bed), going to therapy or being supportive in some way.
Goals are meant to keep you focused on what you want in life. Setting goals is not about checking things off a list (although that sure is satisfying). Don’t try to take on everything at once, create some foundations to build upon. Ask yourself if each goal will immediately or eventually lead to more happiness and satisfaction with your life. Make sure the answer is yes or find more worthwhile goals to pursue and delegate the less-important item to your task list.

Love it dude. Add to your to-do list, purchasing a pair of Rayban Meta frames so you can record and use both hands… My wife and each have pairs and they are very handy for this type of filming or photography.
